Congregational singing is at the heart of today’s Jewish worship. Was it always so? Where did our favorite melodies come from? And what do we mean by “tradition” anyway? This illustrated presentation will explore the past, present and future of synagogue music.
Dr. Marsha Bryan Edelman holds degrees in general music, Jewish music and Jewish history from Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Author of “Discovering Jewish Music (Jewish Publication Society, 2003), she has written extensively on the nature and history of Jewish music, and has been acclaimed across the US and Israel for the breadth and popular appeal of her presentations. An active musician, she also serves as Director of Education for the Zamir Choral Foundation, and teaches part time at the H.L. Miller Cantorial School at JTS.
