Religious School
The Rabbi Jacob Friedman School of Jewish Studies offers educational programs aimed at providing Jewish boys and girls with a strong foundation for Jewish living, study, and growth. Emphasis is placed on developing and reinforcing reading and comprehension skills, love and understanding of the Torah and T’fillah (prayer), and exposure to various aspects of Jewish life, history, and ethics.
With the cooperation and support of parents, our Religious School provides its students with the foundations of a Jewish education within a positive setting. Our Education Director, Ben Laskowitz, works closely with Rabbi Schonbrun and Cantor Siegel, as well as an interactive Education Committee, to create a dynamic educational program. Our educators are well qualified and have taught for many years at various Jewish educational institutions. They provide a nurturing and stimulating environment for the students.
Our school meets at the Roseld Avenue Building at 1200 Roseld Avenue in Wanamassa and is in session on the following days:
- Grades K-2: Sunday 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.
- Grades 3-6: Sunday 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. plus Monday and Wednesday 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
- Grade 7: Monday and Wednesday 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
- High School (Grades 8-12): Monday 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
The Religious School uses a variety of vehicles to achieve our objectives of providing students with a thorough understanding of Mitzvot, Shabbat, Israel, Hebrew reading, Jewish holidays, Life Cycle Events, Jewish history, Torah, Jewish music, Jewish culture and symbols. The classroom experience is enhanced by Family Education workshops, structured music and library programs, “Mitzvah Magic”, social interaction, one-on-one tutoring, special education programs, T’fillah (prayer), class services, individualized Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, and weekly Junior Congregation services.
Mitzvah Magic brings to life the Jewish values that are discussed in the classroom. Each grade selects a Mitzvah theme such as Homeless Support, Elderly Care, Bikkur Cholim (visiting the sick), and Support to Soldiers and War Veterans. The students develop ways for the entire Religious School to perform Mitzvot and raise Tzedakah (charity) in support of their chosen theme.
Many of our Hebrew High School students volunteer as Student Aids in the Religious School.
