Even though it snowed this past week, and it is only the beginning of March- we are less than two weeks away from Passover!

Every year around Passover I get some type of question about the “kitniyot” (legumes) issue. Rabbi, what is the story with eating rice on Passover? Why is it that Sefaradim can eat rice and we don’t?

In truth the prohibition about eating rice and legumes on Passover is based on custom and not law. Kitniyot, in and of themselves, are not “chametz.” In fact, if you took a plate full of rice and dumped it onto your Pesach dishes- they would still be kosher for Passver. ( As long as the rice was marked Kosher for Passover-something that is found easily in only two places that I know of: Israel, and Deal, NJ! )

That having been said, I know many Ashkenazim who would never think of having rice at their Seder!

So what is this issue all about? Check out the following articles that are both humorous and informative.

2.   The Kitniyot Dilemma- May Ashkenazim eat rice and legumes on Pseach?

What is your practice? What do you think? Will you have Kosher For Passover Hummus with your karpas this year? What about Kosher for Passover peanut butter on your matzah?
